Different Types Of Skin Cancer

You may not realize it but every time you go out into the direct sunlight unprotected, you are setting yourself up for disaster. While the sun is an essential part to our existence on the planet, it must be enjoyed in moderation and you have to protect your skin. A good SPF can help you achieve a healthy glow without opening yourself up to skin cancer. There are several types of skin cancer that you can get.

Let's take a look at what the sun can do to you. There are three types of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma is often referred to as non-melanoma skin cancer. This makes up more than ninety percent of all skin cancers. It typically manifests itself as a skin colored, soft bump on your hands, face or neck. Cure rate for this form of skin cancer is 95%.

Squamous cell carcinoma is also a non-melanoma form of skin cancer. It presents itself as a red blotch on the skin. It is often scaly in appearance. Squamous cell carcinoma is easily treated and also has a 95% cure rate.

Malignant melanoma is the third main form of skin cancer. It is dangerous and is responsible for seventy five percent of the deaths that are associated with skin cancer. People with fair skin and light features such as blonde hair and blue eyes are most commonly affected by malignant melanoma.

Typically this form of skin cancer presents as a mole that suddenly changes size or shape. The mole may also become hard or itchy and may even ooze fluid. If you have any moles on your body, make sure to keep an eye on them and contact your physician if anything changes. As this is the most deadly form of skin cancer, it is imperative that you seek medical attention if you think that you have these symptoms.

There is no such thing as being overly cautious when it comes to skin cancer. You need to wear an SPF sunscreen anytime you're being exposed to the sun's rays no matter where you live or what time of year it is. There are so many common misconceptions about the sun and when it's harmful that many people are led astray by their own beliefs.

What's important to know? The sun can cause many different types of skin cancer. Make sure you're aware of any changes to your skin. If you have lots of freckles and moles and have never really paid much attention to them and you're not having any symptoms, ask your physician the next time you visit to check out your moles. This way you'll be applying a little preventative measure to make sure that you are safe.

Make sure you know about the different types of skin cancer and what to look for. Observe not only yourself but your spouse, children and friends and other family members, as well. Keep your loved ones healthy by limiting their exposure to the afternoon sunlight and keeping them covered with a good SPF sunscreen.
