Is skin cancer a problem in Australia? This is a good question considering there are two factors that can make the potential for skin cancer higher than it would normally be. The first of these is the natural tone or pigmentation of your skin. Some people are simply susceptible to skin cancer because of their skin and therefore should take extra care to avoid potentially deadly skin cancer.
The second factor is the geographic location of an area. Some areas are more prone to skin cancer because of its location in association with the equator. The latitude of a country has a major effect on the overall threat for skin cancer.
Australia is greatly affected by the sun due to these two conditions. Not only is Australia in a potentially location for skin cancer, but a good percentage of permanent residents are of a light skin tone and are likely to be easily affected by the sun's Ultra Violet rays. As a result of these conditions and other factors Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.
What basically cause skin cancer are the sun's Ultra Violet rays. These rays basically serve as a type of radiation and consequently are the primary factor to the hazards of direct exposure to the sun. While these rays are potentially hazardous everywhere, southern locations such as Australia and the southern half of the United States have a higher concentration of Ultra Violet rays because of their angle to the sun.
The further north an area is the less direct exposure to hazardous ultra violet rays. This means that countries such as Switzerland or Canada are less prone to skin cancer. The other factor that contributes to the overall exposure to skin cancer, that we have already mentioned is the tone of one's skin. There are nationalities that are characteristically more at risk for skin cancer than others.
Europeans are of a light skin tone and tend to be susceptible to skin cancer. Europeans, such as English, Scottish, Irish and other northern countries have a general characteristic of having, light skin tone, light hair color and freckles. These ethnic groups have immigrated to the United States and Australia in the last 200 years or so. This means that a good portion of the citizens of these countries are of European descent. Therefore they are light skinned and susceptible to skin cancer.
Australia has a serious skin cancer problem as result of these factors. As a result of these conditions there are health organizations that are focusing on this problem. They are striving to provide public awareness of the potential dangers of the sun. They are also attempting to educate the citizens of Australia on how to improperly protect themselves.
Many people take for granted the rays of the sun and this can be the greatest factor contributing to skin cancer. While the location of Australia and the general skin tone of its citizens are major factors, the primary factor is that people fail to realize that when they get sun burnt they are doing more than just burning the top layer of skin. They are contributing to the increased potential for skin ca
