Why Should I Protect My Children From The Sun?

Beachside family vacations are great for creating precious memories that you will value for years to come. You will bring along the camera and take plenty of pictures to help you remember this time on the beach. Your children will most likely frolic in the water and make a major construction project out of creating their personal version of a sand castle; they may spend endless hours combing the beach for unique seashells. This can all be great but are your kids protected from the sun? If you ask "Why Should I protect my children from the sun?", then there are some points you should take into consideration.

Sure it is healthy for your kids to play out in the fresh air, and the beach is a great excuse to pull them away from the video games and computers, not to mention the chance it may give you to relax, but if you are going to have your children spend time in the sun then you should consider the affect it may have on them.

The medical world has discovered that direct exposure to the sun has hazardous potentials. These effects may not be seen immediately and may not make themselves known until much later. However, helping your children learn the importance of protecting themselves from the hazardous rays of the sun can go far to their avoiding the potential of skin cancer in the future.

While they may fuss a little about having lotion rubbed on them it is a good idea to put a high UV protectant lotion on them as soon as you get to the beach, before they have a chance of getting exposed to the sun. It is typically easier to get them to allow you to put the lotion on before you actually get to the water's edge. Once they are occupied with everything the beach has to offer, you will have a tough time trying to get them to allow you to put the lotion on.

Other events are time to put lotion on as well. Sporting events or any time they will get exposed to the sun. Your kids learn from you, send them a message that you are serious about sun protectant. They will eventually get into the habit of doing it themselves.

There are several reasons why you should put sun protectant on your children anytime they will be exposed to the sun for extended periods of time. As already mentioned, the potential for skin poisoning is a major reason why your children should be protected. It has been found through intensive studies that up to 70% of the exposure a person receives in their lifetime will occur during their childhood.

It has also been found that extensive exposure to the sun can have an adverse effect on the immune system. The amount of time a child spends in the sun can reduce their bodies' ability to fight off infection and disease. This is a major reason to protect your child.

Infants and toddlers are very sensitive to the dangers of the sun; even 15 minutes may be enough to burn a small child. Remember that just because you do not feel direct heat from the sun, it does not mean that your children aren't at danger of the sun's rays. Cool breezes that come off the ocean can make it easy to think that it is safe to not use protectant. It is during these times that people tend to get burnt, because they didn't think to put on protectant.
